- Geography:
Khoy
County is the largest and most populous county of West Azerbaijan
province after the Urmia with an area of 5,548 square kilometers in the
northwest of Iran and Azerbaijan and has an official border with Turkey.
The center of this county is Khoy, which is located in the north of
West Azerbaijan province with an area of about 30 square kilometers.
Khoy is located in a wide plain and surrounded by soaring mountains and
so it is known as "Khoy Chokhoro".
According to the results of the
2016 (1395) census, the country divisions of this county based on the
district, city, rural district and village are as follows:

Khoy districts include the central district, Safaieh district (center
of Zarabad), Evogli district (center of Evogli) and Qotur district
(center of Qotur).
- Khoy, Firuraq, Dizaj, Evogli, Zarabad and Qotur are also cities of Khoy County.
- Demographics:According
to the 2016 (1395) census, the population of this county was 348,664
people, of which 225,931 were in urban areas and 122,731 were in rural
areas. Khoy is 780 and 165 km away from Tehran and Tabriz, respectively,
and the Iran-Europe transit road crosses 30 km from there.
- History :
Khoy
is one of the ancient centers of civilization in northwestern Iran and
the Historical Bazaar of Khoy is the peak of civilization of urban
civilization and urban planning in the Islamic period. Due to 7,000
years old and being located on the Silk Road, Khoy has a vicissitudinous
history and civilization and has witnessed various historical events.
With this historical and cultural background, Khoy is the burial place
of many famous people in the history of Iran.
Khoy has been one of
the most important military bases for defending Iran throughout history.
The fateful epic battle of Chaldiran took place between the two empires
of Iran and the Ottoman Empire in the neighborhood of Khoy.
The
famous Iranian hero, Pourya-ye Vali, is one of the heroes (Pahlevan) of
this land and his tomb is also located in Khoy. The tomb of Shams
Tabrizi, the great and famous poet of Iran, is also located in this
city. Due to the cultural commonalities and the existence of the tomb of
Shams Tabrizi, as the master of Rumi, in Khoy and the tomb of Rumi in
Konya, Turkey, there are a sisterhood relationship between these two
cities.
Koroghlu fortress (Koroğlu qalası) is located in this city.
Koroghlu is a common epic hero among many Turks, including the Turks of
Azerbaijan and Turkey, the Turkmen, the Uzbeks and the Uyghurs. The
poems and songs of this historical myth are read among the ethnics of 16
countries and is one of the cultural commonalities between neighboring
countries and ECO (Economic Cooperation Organization) .
Khoy is
populated by both Azerbaijanis and Kurds. The main religious belief is
Shia Islam and also a minority of Sunni Muslims also live there.
- Historic sites, tourist and natural attractions :
Regarding
the natural attractions of Khoy County, it should be said that the
average annual rainfall of 300-400 mm and the presence of snowcapped
mountains around the city has created beautiful and pristine natural
landscapes in Khoy. Especially late spring and early summer are the best
times to travel and benefit from the divine gifts of Khoy. The resort
of Pereh, the Valley of Hell (Jahannam-darreh), the Valley of Qolo (Qolo
Darrasi), ALIŞIQ, Haji Bey Yaylak (Haji Bey Yaylaghi), the Valley of
Qara (Qolo Darrasi), Mamishkhan, Qris, the Avrin foothills, and tens of
boiling springs are just a few of the natural and scenic places of Khoy.
Part
of the valuable history of Khoy city can be seen in historical sites
such as Shams Tabrizi tomb, Pourya-ye Vali tomb, Khatoon bridge (Pol
Khatoon), covered Bazaar, Kabiri-ha house (Khane-ye Kabiriha), Abd
al-Muttalib Khan, Mullah Hassan, Seyed Al-Shohada, and Haji Baba old
mosques, Khan caravanserai, Sorp Sarkis and Mahlazan churches, Seyed
Behlool shrine and etc.
